LinkedIn Headline Examples That Get Recruiters to Click
Your LinkedIn headline is the single most-read line on your profile. It appears in every search result, every comment you leave, and every connection request you send. It's also the highest-weighted field in LinkedIn's search algorithm.
Most people waste this space with the default 'Job Title at Company' — which LinkedIn auto-fills and which carries almost no search value. Here's how to write a headline that gets you found and clicked.

[Target Role] | [2–3 Key Skills/Tools] | [Value Statement or Industry]
This formula works because it gives recruiters three things in one line: what role you're targeting, what skills you have, and why you're worth clicking on. It's keyword-rich without feeling stuffed.

5 Rules for Writing Your Headline
1. Front-load the most important keyword.
Only ~60 characters show on mobile and in search previews. Put your target job title in the first 40 characters.
2. Use standard job titles.
Recruiters search 'Software Engineer,' not 'Code Ninja.' If your internal title is creative, add the standard equivalent in parentheses.
3. Include hard skills, not soft skills.
'Python, SQL, Tableau' is searchable. 'Team player, dedicated, passionate' is not — recruiters never filter for those.
4. Add one proof point.
A metric, a notable employer, a certification. 'Ex-Stripe' or 'AWS Certified' adds instant credibility.
5. Never write 'Looking for opportunities' or 'Seeking new challenges.'
These tell recruiters nothing about your skills and waste your most visible real estate. Use LinkedIn's 'Open to Work' feature instead.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buzzwords:'Results-driven,' 'innovative,' 'thought leader' — all meaningless to a keyword search
- Keyword stuffing: Write for humans first; keywords should read naturally
- Too clever:If someone has to think for 2 seconds to understand what you do, you've lost them
- Leaving the default:'Job Title at Company' is the LinkedIn auto-fill — it's the #1 reason profiles don't appear in searches
