The 12-Point LinkedIn Profile Audit Checklist
Recruiters spend 7–30 seconds on your LinkedIn profile before deciding whether to reach out. In those seconds, they're running through a mental checklist — and if your profile fails on 3 or more items, they move on.
Here's exactly what recruiters check, why each item matters, and how to fix it today.

When a recruiter runs a search in LinkedIn Recruiter, they see a card view — not your full profile. That card shows:
- Name and profile photo
- Current title (your headline)
- Current company
- Previous title and company
- Education
- Open to Work flag
What they don't see at this stage: your About section, recommendations, Featured content, or posts. This means your headline and job titles carry almost all the weight at the discovery stage. Optimize for the card view first, everything else second.
The 12-Point Audit Checklist
1. Headline
Check: Does it contain your target role + 3 keywords?
Fix: Replace 'Job Title at Company' with [Target Role] | [Key Skills] | [Value Statement]. Example: Senior Product Manager | B2B SaaS · Roadmaps · Growth | Ex-Stripe
2. Profile Photo
Check: Professional, head-and-shoulders, clean background?
Fix: Profiles with photos get 14x more views. Use a well-lit headshot with a neutral background. No selfies, no group photos cropped to one person.
3. About Section
Check: First-person, hook in first line, metrics, CTA?
Fix:Use the 4-part structure: hook (what you do) → proof (metrics) → focus (what you want) → CTA (how to reach you). Only the first ~300 characters show before 'see more.'
4. Experience Bullets
Check: Outcomes with numbers, not duties?
Fix: Rewrite each bullet using: [Action verb] + [specific thing] + [measurable result]. 'Managed a team' → 'Led a 12-person team that shipped 3 products, reducing time-to-market by 40%.'
5. Skills Section
Check: All 50 filled? Top 3 pinned to target role? Hard skills over soft?
Fix: Add both broad terms and specific tools. Pin your 3 most target-aligned hard skills. Use standard names (not abbreviations).
6. Featured Section
Check: 2–3 items pinned? Resume PDF, portfolio, case study?
Fix: Pin your resume PDF, a portfolio piece or case study, and your best LinkedIn post. This is prime real estate — an empty Featured section is a missed opportunity.
7. Open to Work
Check: Enabled in recruiter-only mode?
Fix:Go to Settings → Open to Work → select 'Recruiters Only.' This is invisible to your employer but puts you in a prioritized search tier. Takes 60 seconds.
8. Recommendations
Check: 3+ specific recommendations from managers/peers?
Fix: Ask 3–5 former managers and colleagues for recommendations. Give them context on what to highlight — specific projects and outcomes.
9. Activity Level
Check: Posted or commented in the last 7 days?
Fix:LinkedIn's algorithm factors in activity recency. Post once a week and comment thoughtfully on 10 posts in your industry. A dormant profile ranks lower.
10. Custom URL
Check: linkedin.com/in/yourname?
Fix: Edit your public profile URL to include your name. Google indexes this page — your headline and About section become searchable on the open web.
11. Job Titles
Check: Standard, searchable titles? Not creative internal titles?
Fix:If your internal title is non-standard, add the standard equivalent in parentheses: 'Member of Technical Staff (Senior Software Engineer).'
12. Consistency with Resume
Check: Same dates, titles, and companies as your resume?
Fix: Mismatches between LinkedIn and your resume are red flags for recruiters. Align all dates, titles, and company names.
Getting Views But No Interviews?
If your profile is getting views but you're not getting interview calls, your headline and keywords are working (you're showing up in searches) but your profile isn't converting. Treat this as a funnel problem:
- Fix what recruiters see first.Rewrite your About to open with a one-line value proposition, followed by 2 quantified achievements, and close with 'Open to [specific roles] — reach me at [email].'
- Add proof. Pin 2–3 items to your Featured section — case studies, portfolio pieces, project write-ups.
- Make contact frictionless. Put your email in your About section. Enable the private Open to Work recruiter signal.
- Replace generic bullets with metrics.'Managed a team' becomes 'Led a 12-person engineering team that shipped 3 major products, reducing time-to-market by 40%.'
- Follow up proactively.Send a short message to recruiters who viewed your profile: 'I noticed you viewed my profile — I'm exploring [role] opportunities and would be happy to share a one-page summary.'
- Check your targeting. If the recruiters viewing your profile are from unrelated industries, your keywords are attracting the wrong audience. Audit your headline and skills against the job postings you actually want.
The Priority Matrix: What to Fix First
- Score below 40? Fix headline, About, and skills first. These are the highest-impact, fastest-to-change sections.
- Score 40–70? Add Featured content, get recommendations, enable Open to Work. Your foundation is decent — now build proof.
- Score above 70? Focus on activity, networking, and proactive outreach. Your profile is strong enough — the bottleneck is reach, not content.
Most profiles lose opportunities silently because they fail 3–4 of these 12 checks. Fix your top 3 issues today, then check your score again in 2 weeks.
